Bluefield College Students Crown 2018 Homecoming Court

Bluefield College students crowned the school’s 2018 Homecoming King, Queen, and underclass Princes and Princesses during the Homecoming football game, November 3.

The students crowned Evan Abbey and Mary Blake Avery as King and Queen, respectively, along with DaMarcus Wimbush and Taylyn Strange as Junior Prince and Princess. Gavin Bauer was named Sophomore Prince and Ashley Young Sophomore Princess, while Dustin Barker earned Freshman Prince and Courtney Yandle Freshman Princess.

Abbey is a double major in chemistry and biology. He is from Bluefield, West Virginia, and is a member of Baptist Collegiate Ministries and the Rams cross country team.

“It was really cool to have that (being crowned King) as one of my last memories at Bluefield,” said Abbey, “since I am graduating in December.”

Avery is majoring in exercise and sports science with a concentration in sports medicine. She is from Newport News, Virginia, and is a member of the women’s softball team and the Student Activities Leadership Team (SALT).

Wimbush is also an exercise and sports science major. He is from Danville, Virginia, and is a member of the Rams football team. Strange, a member of the BC Honors Program, is majoring in English and teacher education. She is from Cocke County, Tennessee, and is a member of the women’s softball team and the Rams cheerleading squad.

A native of Bluefield, West Virginia, Bauer is majoring in business administration. He is also a member of the cross country team and Baptist Collegiate Ministries. Young, a native of Halifax, Virginia, is majoring in elementary education and minoring in music. She is also a member of Baptist Collegiate Ministries and is a Student Ambassador for Bluefield College.

Barker is a business administration major from Pound, Virginia, He is also a member of the Rams football team. From Indian Trail, North Carolina, Yandle is majoring in elementary education and is a Student Ambassador for Bluefield College.

Four other BC seniors were candidates for Homecoming King, including Dagoberto De Jesus Acevedo from Cojutepeque, El Salvador; Zachary Wright from Abingdon, Virginia; Jacob Webster from Ringgold, Virginia; and Devon Jackson from Mechanicsville, Virginia. Acevedo is a communications major. Wright is a biology major and member of the Rams football team. Webster is a Christian studies major and member of Baptist Collegiate Ministries. Jackson is an exercise and sports science major and a member of the Rams football team.

Three other BC seniors were candidates for Homecoming Queen, including Channel Flores from Fort Worth, Texas; Courtney Kendrick from Teays Valley, West Virginia; and Allyson Carter from Cool Ridge, West Virginia. Flores is a pre-med major and former women’s volleyball player. Kendrick is a biology major and member of the women’s basketball team. Carter is a math major with teacher licensure and a member of Baptist Collegiate Ministries and Alpha Chi.

Other candidates for Junior Prince and Princess included Gustavo Gomez from Galax, Virginia, and Jordyn O’Saben from Warrenton, Virginia. Gomez is majoring in criminal justice with a minor in Christian studies. He is also a member of the cross country team, wrestling team and Bass Fishing Club, and a resident assistant and Student Ambassador. O’Saben is a communications major and art minor and a member of the cross country team, Art Club, and Kappa Pi.

Other candidates for Sophomore Prince and Princess included Michael Gutu from Harare, Zimbabwe, and Mattison Stokes from Tracy, California. Gutu is majoring in business management and business information technology with a minor in communications. He is also a member of the tennis and cross country teams. Stokes is a communications major and a member of the women’s soccer team and cheerleading squad.

Gavin Rush from Broadway, Virginia, and Garrett Wright from Bluefield, Virginia, were additional candidates for Freshman Prince, while Baylee Sheets from Tazewell, Virginia, was another candidate for Freshman Princess. Rush is a criminal justice major and a member of the baseball team. Wright is majoring in biology with a minor in psychology. He’s also a member of the cross country team. Sheets is an exercise and sports science major and a member of the women’s basketball and cheer teams.

Students voted in an online poll for the candidates. The candidates and winners were recognized at halftime of the Homecoming football game at Mitchell Stadium.
