Trevon Bright Overcomes Great Odds to Play Football for BC
Trevon Bright is a Bluefield College Rams football player from DeLand, Florida, who has overcome more than the average obstacles to earn a scholarship to play college football. In fact, as a result of a tragic accident when he was just six years old, Bright lost part of his right leg, but not his passion and determination to play the sport he loves.
“I experienced something tragic that no one should ever experience at such a young age,” said Bright. “I lost my right leg at age six due to a tractor accident.”
After the accident, Bright said he knew his life would never be the same. The accident occurred in November of 2006 on a family farm where Bright lived with his grandparents and three siblings. He said he thought it was just a typical day on the farm when he had to fix a fence broken by the cows. Little did he know his life was about to change forever.
“I had to sit on my grandfather’s lap while riding the tractor,” said Bright. “On the way back to the farmhouse, we hit a tree stump and the tractor tipped on two side wheels, and we fell off and the bush hog (the machine that cuts grass) ran me over and cut off everything below my right knee.”
Bright played football as a child, but after the accident he doubted whether he would ever be able to play the game again. Despite his fear that playing would make his situation worse, he decided to continue with the game with the help of a prosthetic leg. His faith in God, he recalls, enabled him to overcome the physical and mental challenges he faced.
“It took a lot of patience, faith, and confidence to stay committed to the game,” said Bright, “because the pain I felt while doing it was like no other. I was able to overcome obstacles that I faced, because I worked too hard to let something little stop me. Plus, all of the support from my family and friends, also with the help of God for the health and strength he gave me to continue what I love.”
While devastating injuries like this would end most people’s dreams, it didn’t destroy Bright’s. Playing football as a child and as a teen was one thing, but playing at the collegiate level was still his ultimate goal. He said he stayed patient and trusted the process God had for him. In the end, the offer to play college football came from Bluefield College.
“Now to be able to play college football is a dream come true and a blessing,” said Bright. “I never thought I’d get the chance to play college football, because I thought no one would take a chance on recruiting me because of my condition and especially my size for the position.”
Bright plays defensive end for the Rams. And while he doesn’t start he still takes part in key plays to help the BC defense. Joining him on the roster is his younger brother, Trevon Bright, who is a running back for the Rams’ offense.
